“I saw all the mirrors on earth and none of them reflected me” The Aleph, Jorge Luis Borges
Imprints is a series of silver gelatin photographs made in collaboration between artists Ben K. Voss and Midge Wattles. The photographs, made by Wattles, depict drawings made in the snow by Voss during a residency they both attended outside of Aspen, Colorado in January of 2018. The series of 14 photographs, each an edition of 5, suggest a wide range of subjects such as a naturalistic, other worldly terrain or the mapping of scars or symbols on a body. Their collaboration explores a dialogue between the inner vision of the drawings and the physical world they inhabit as photographs. This relationship of image-making blurs the lines of intention between expression and documentation, landscape and still life, and the mediums of photography and drawing. As in the enigmatic Borges quote above, Imprints reflects a presence, not of an individual, but of a particular moment and mark in time.
