The Unsung
glazed ceramic, varied dimensions.
Twelve site-specific sculptures made for the historic Green Lobby
stairwell at Kingswood School for Girls, part of Cranbrook Academy in
Bloomfield Hills, MI. I made these sculptures in homage to Mary Chase
Perry Straton, the co-founder of Pewabic Pottery in Detroit, who
hand-made the tiles in 1931 in collaboration with Eliel Saarinen. I
envisioned these abstract feminine figures emerging from the stairwell
handles, hinting at an affinity between women across generations.
